Discrete means unconnected and distinct. Other energy states don’t overlap with it; there is a minimum spacing between each energy state and the ones next to it.

As an analogy, whole numbers are discrete, occurring in steps of 1, but real numbers (those represented by decimals) are continuous, with numbers arbitrarily close to one another. This is discussed on page 564.
