"Tin" cans contain iron. Magnetic domains in the can line up with Earth's magnetic field (see pages 456-457) if they are not moved, turning the can into a weak bar magnet. If a can is rotated to a new position, the can's poles will gradually rotate to again align with Earth's magnetic field.
