Chapter 21 - Think and Do - Page 401: 21

Answer

This is a hands-on demonstration. Try this with your friends, and be prepared to explain the physics of the demonstration to them.

Work Step by Step

Your more sensitive ear will be able to hear the ticking clock when it is farther away, because sound intensity decreases with distance. When you cup your hands around your ears, your hands catch sound waves that would have passed your head, and re-direct them into your ear canal, improving your hearing. Animals with large earholes (such as owls) or large ears (such as elephants) are renowned for their sensitive hearing.
