By Bernoulli's principle, when the speed of a fluid decreases, the internal pressure increases. The faster-moving water between 2 ships results in reduced pressure on the sides of the ships that face each other.
The greater water pressure, on the sides of the ships not facing each other, tends to push the ships together.
