This is a hands-on demonstration. Try it and see! If you hold the stick at various angles away from the horizontal, you illustrate the principle shown in Figures 10.7 and 10.8. The vertical distance fallen by a projectile below the idealized straight path (represented by the meter stick) is the distance it would fall if released from rest. This is independent of launch angle.
