If you hold the stick at various angles away from the horizontal, you illustrate the principle shown in Figures 10.7 and 10.8. The vertical distance fallen by a projectile below the idealized straight path (represented by the meter stick) is the distance it would fall if released from rest. This is independent of launch angle.
