Scientific notation is used because it allows one to write very large and very small numbers quickly and compactly. Furthermore, it allows for easy comparison between numbers that would otherwise require counting zeroes. In addition to this, it looks nice to see scientific notation rather than seeing dozens of zeroes written on the page.
