Chapter 5 - Nomenclature - 5.3 Naming The Parent Chain - Problems - Page 90: 5.19

Answer

The parent will be called "hex".

Work Step by Step

This parent will be called "hex". 1. Is there a functional group? If there are any functional groups, mark the part that has it. (Until a bifurcation.) 2. Is there a double bond? If there are any double bond, mark the part that has it. (Until a bifurcation, and unless this violates the first step.) 3. Is there a triple bond? If there are any triple bonds, mark the part that has them. (Until a bifurcation, and unless this violates the first or the second steps.) 4. Find the longest chain of carbons. ** Hint: Look for bifurcations, and choose the two who have the largest number of carbons. (Not violating the steps 1, 2 or 3.) Do it for all bifurcations.
