Chapter 14 - Self-Quiz - Page 230: 8

Answer

A male inherits an X chromosome from his mother and a Y chromosome from his father.

Work Step by Step

Human females can only offer an X chromosome to her offspring. Males pass on either an X or a Y chromosome to his offspring; therefore, it is the male parent who determines the gender of the child. Each sperm cell has either an X or a Y chromosome in it. If the sperm cell merging with the egg cell contains an X chromosome, the resulting child will be female; on the other hand, if that sperm cell contains a Y chromosome, the child will be male.
