ATP is essential to the function and continued life of most cells. Excessive consumption of ATP can lead to the death of the cell and subsequently the death of the organism. Being able to use GTP for lesser reactions conserves ATP for the cell.

ATP is continuously made and broken down within the cells. If an organism lacks ATP, it will die so any mechanism by which ATP may be conserved is essential to survival of the organism.
