Chapter 5 - Membrane Structure and Function - Assess - Page 99: 6

Answer

C. plasmolysis

Work Step by Step

Plasmolysis is the term used when the cytoplasm shrinks due to osmosis. If a plant cell is placed in a hypertonic solution, the solute concentration is higher outside of the plant cell. As a result, water is drawn from the central vacuole within the plant cell to the outside of the cell, causing separation of the plasma membrane from the cell wall due to decrease in the amount of cytoplasm.
