Answer

Basic properties of an antacid neutralize the acid.

Work Step by Step

pH is the negative logarithm of hydrogen ion concentration, pH of the solution depends upon the Hydrogen ion concentration. our stomach secretes hydrochloric acid to kill the pathogenic microbes entering into our body, and to digest food. If the concentration of hydrochloric acid in the stomach increases the hydrogen ion concentration also increases, so the pH decreases. Acid reflux causes heartburn. Antacids are the basic substances which can react with acids and neutralize them. They increase the pH and thus, reduce the acid effect. Modern antacids contain chemicals called proton pump inhibitors. They inhibit the stomach cells from secreting H+ ions, thus decrease the secretion of HCl into the stomach.
