Descartes invented the Cartesian co-ordinate system or the rectangular co-ordinate system which connected algebra and geometry by associating geometric shapes with algebraic equations. He believed that knowledge comes from what we can be proven without any doubt and supposed science and reading. Pascal, on the other hand, believe that science was merely hypothetical and can yield no true results. His philosophy was the knowledge is gained from the faith in God and divine revelation
