For a small sample that comes from a normal population, the sign test requires a sample with almost the same size that the single-sample t-test uses because the efficiency of the sign test is very close to 1. But, for a large sample that comes from a normal population, the sign test requires a larger sample. For example, if the single-sample t-test uses a sample of size 637, the sign test requires a sample of size 1000 in order to have the same efficiency.
