The question about choosing a small sample from a relatively larger population size can be understood by taking the random numbers example. Say the population size is 1000, i.e the maximum number is 1000. So the random numbers generator has 1000+1 options to choose numbers from. But we are only choosing 10 numbers from the population. Hence, the probability of choosing the same number decreases, and repetition decreases.
