We know the lines are parallel because the Converse of the Alternate Exterior Angles Theorem tells us that if the alternate exterior angles are congruent, the lines are parallel. Angles 1 and 2 are alternate exterior angles because they lie on opposite sides of the transversal and are outside the two lines.
