Chapter 1 - Solving Linear Equations - 1.4 - Solving Absolute Value Equations - Exercises - Page 32: 25

Answer

a) See image b) $|x-92.95|=1.55$

Work Step by Step

a) We graph the numbers $91.4$ and $94.5$ on the number line. b) The absolute value equation will be of the format $$| x - h | = d,\tag{1}$$ where $d$ is the distance from halfway point to $max$ or $min$ value and $h$ is the halfway point between the $min$ and $max$ values in the number line. The distance d is obtained as $$\begin{align} d& = 0.5 \cdot (max - min)\\ &= 0.5 \cdot (94.5 - 91.4)\\ &= 1.55. \end{align}$$ The halfway point is $$\begin{align} h& = min + d\\ & = 91.4 + 1.55\\ & = 92.95. \end{align}$$ Substituting in equation $(1)$, the absolute value equation that represents the minimum and maximum distances is $$| x - 92.95| = 1.55.$$
