When we are considering addition and subtraction, we always combine like terms. There is only one term with an m raised to the first power, so we will leave m alone. However, there are two numerical terms, 4.5 and .5. These like terms we subtract (as indicated by the fact that .5 is negative) to get 4. This leaves us with the final expression: 4+m.
