Orgon's family and their servant, Dorine, share share Cleante's mistrust of Tartuffe. . . . Damis's desire [is] to force his father to see Tartuffe for what he really is. For Mariane and Valere, Tartuffe not only exemplifies religious hypocrisy and tyranny over the family, but he is also the obstacle to their marriage and future happiness. The reactions of Orgon's children reflect their sense of whawt is right.
