Why did the people of the village hope that Gaspard won't be exceucted?

gaspard is a french pesant who killed marquis evermonde and went in hiding for almost a year he killed marquis because her carriage run over gaspard son. he was later found and hanged in public.

In context, the peasants hate the aristocracy. The marquis is a vicious, uncaring, and cruel man, who thought nothing of the lives of the people and showed no remorse over the death of a child caused by his driver's negligence. Gaspard had everyone's sympathy.... except for the Marquis.
