A Tale of Two Cities

When Carton’s replies to Madame Defarge’s question “Yes, madame, yes. I am English!” is he speaking in English or French? Give a reason for your answer TAKEN FROM OUTSIDE THIS PASSAGE (clue – look in Book III, Chapter 14: “The Knitting Done”).

How would I look at answering this?

Carton is speaking in French.... poor French to be certain, but French none-the-less.

As Carton walked in, took his seat and asked (in very indifferent French) for a small measure of wine, Madame Defarge cast a careless glance at him, and then a keener, and then a keener, and then advanced to him herself, and asked him what it was he had ordered.
