Sweetness was written by Toni Morrison and published on February 2, 2015. It is the second short story she has published. It was published in The New Yorker magazine.
The story Sweetness is about a light-black skinned mother who gives birth to a dark-skinned baby and has a hard time loving her. The story is about the mother thinking back on how she has raised her child, what she did wrong and what she did right. This story explores a lot about race, history, and circumstance. This story is connected to another of Morrison’s books, published on April 21, 2015, God help the Child. In this one, the baby who was born in Sweetness needs to move on from her childhood pains. So the way the two books connect is in one a child needs to move on from their past pain and forgive those who hurt her in the past. And in this book Sweetness, the mom is reflecting on how she raised her child wrong and didn’t really love or accept they baby.
