Why was the final scene changed from black to white?

Why was the final scene changed from black to white?

When I first saw this movie I was startled by the intensity of the sudden black screen at the end. As heartbreaking ads it was, I felt it was more correct.

I think the white symbolized something. Perhaps memory or lack of memory? I'm not sure.

Thanks,but that doesn't answer WHY it was changed.

Obviously black was stunning sad,but WHY the change?
