Star Wars: The Force Awakens Themes

Choice

This theme is represented in the fact that each person can choose which side of the force they want to be on, whether for light or dark. Kylo Ren is the antithesis to Rey, as he is powerful in the dark side and she is just coming into her understanding of her power in the force.

Father and Son

The relationship between Kylo Ren and Han Solo is a major theme in this film. Kylo, formerly known as Ben Solo has a deep hatred for his father who he feels abandoned him in his life. Kylo gets his power in the force from the pain and rage he feels from the wounds of his father. When it appears Ben is willing to reconcile, he kills his father and proves how far he has gone in the dark side.

Awakening

The force awakening is a theme in this film that is represented in Rey coming out of extreme poverty in her life and being led by a series of events that reveal her connection to the force and the Jedi. With the force awakening in the universe, we also learn that the last Jedi, Luke Skywalker, has hidden himself away on a distant planet. By the end Rey finds him, and the Jedi order is reawakened as the film ends.
