Spirited Away (2001 Film) Quotes

Quotes

Welcome the rich man, he's hard for you to miss. His butt keeps getting bigger, so there's plenty there to kiss!

Aniyaku (Bathhouse Assistant Manager)

Welcoming No-Face to the bath, who has shown his wealth by providing a gold coin, the assistant manager urges his employees to bring the food. The choice of words shows clear critique of society and the behavior of the high and mighty.

Come on! Quit eating! Let’s get out of here!

Chihiro

Chihiro urges her parents to stop eating, to stop their own transformation into pigs. The young protagonists literally fights her parents greed and focus on consumerism. Unfortunately she fails, seeing her parents helpless to their own vices. Her journey into adulthood can begin.

Once you've met someone you never really forget them. It just takes a while for your memories to return.

Zeniba

The twin sister of the main antagonist Yubaba talks to Chihiro after she managed to board the train and alights at her cottage. She is thus offering spiritual guidance to the young girl in trouble. Throughout the movie, Zeniba, in the short scenes she appears in, offers the most insightful and memorable quotes. This particular quote in the end helps Chihiro remember who Haku really is, identifying him as the river she once fell into.

Three days of eating our food, and her smell will go away.

Haku

Haku explains to the workers in the bathhouse that Chihiro's humanity, and therefore her difference, will soon be no trouble anymore. This assimilation into the crowd is depicted as something vital that saves Chihiro's life. This can be interpreted as a metaphor for the troubles of teenage years, the need to fit in, in direct conflict with the need of self-expression.
