Heather is incredibly insensitive,ignorant and naive when she ends her friendship with Melinda. Her motives for ending the friendship are selfish and cruel-

'You don't like anything.You are the most depressed person I've ever met...you are no fun to be around and I think you need professional help.'

Heather's last observation may be correct, but Melinda needs sensitive, trustworthy people around her. She needs to be cared for and helped, not cast aside.

Melinda is further crushed when Heather returns her friendship necklace in a Valentines card. Melinda is bereft and has a panic attack-

'my ribs are collapsing in on my lungs'
