Paul's mother is a very loving mother, none-the-less, she is also very protective and controlling. Gertrude is a strong woman, who has faced her own share of personal hardships and tragedy; she acted as a single parent in a two parent home; she was self-sacrificing and self-sufficient; and on numerous occasions she was forced to protect her children from their own father. The relationships Gertrude has forged with her sons vary as greatly as her sons are different individuals.
