Why does Ama continue to stay with Lakshmi’s stepfather despite his lack of responsibility for his family?

Ama stays because she believes it is her place to do so. She considers submission to her husand to be a part of marriage. She also believes that enduring her position she is triumphant in overcoming the oppression of marriage.
