What is the tone of the novel Snow Falling On Cedars?

I have a seminar on this and it's a huge part of my grade! Please Help Me!  I did read the book however I suck at tone.

This is a dramatic book so the tone is fairly serious. At times the tone feels distant from the actual story being told.
