In the first chapter, the author presents information about Carrie's character in two ways...... mainly what could be depending upon the path she chooses..... and what will be, as is made evident through her reactions and interactions with other characters. Through these interactions and reactions, it becomes apparent that Carrie's first interest is self-interest. We learn quickly that Carrie's focus is position, wealth..... materialism. She will not become a fallen woman because of emotional desire or love, but rather from a desire to advance herself materially.
