Gawain had to summon the courage to volunteer for King Arthur. He also was tested mentally on his solitary arduous journey to the Green Knight's castle. He had to play a lot of mind games with Lady Bertilak and resist her sexual temptations. He also had to decide how honset he would be with the Green Knight.
