Simon Vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda Imagery

Simon's family home

Much of Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda is set in Simon's family's house, which is a comfortable suburban home that shows Simon's happy, peaceful childhood. He was raised in a loving environment that allowed him to grow into the person he became, and the images of his house -- his own room, a large yard -- show readers that.

Email

The image of Simon checking his email inbox is one that represents the stress and excitement of being a teenager in a new relationship. He gets excited whenever he checks his email for a message from Blue, but also stressed when there isn't an email. The image of him checking discreetly at school and as soon as he gets home shows the realities of young teenage relationships.

The theatre

The theatre is an image that reoccurs throughout the novel as the characters participate in the school play. It is shown as a dark room where people can perform fictional characters and feel confident in themselves, during which light shines down on them. This image of coming out of the darkness of backstage and into the light of being onstage represents Simon's journey towards acceptance and loving himself.

The color blue

The color blue corresponds to Blue's username in his and Simon's online conversations, and it represents a symbol of Simon's happiness and acceptance. The blue color also represents calm and tranquility, meaning that whenever Blue's username is mentioned, the image of the color blue invokes feelings of peace for Simon.
