"So he [Dunstan] stepped forward into the darkness." What double meaning do we now know that sentence to have?
Dunstan has stolen from Marner. Although Dunstan thinks this will lead to solving his problems, it will eventually lead to his undoing. Dunstan literally (it's dark outside) and figuratively walks into darkness.
