I think he is skeptical. THe Brahmins are the highest of cast and act like it as well. Siddhartha himself comes from this class and has renounced it all. Desire shackles the soul and Brahmin's feel they are entitled to it. Siddhartha teaches the opposite of what the Brahmin class stands for.
