Characters..i need help

Hi I am reading this book for Honors Enlgish 2...I am not good at doing summaries and character analysis..How would you say all the characters are realated to eachother throughout the book.. Would you say they are all related because they live in the same town and are going through the same things?

Religion is the key relationship between all the characters, in that they are all pursuing various paths to enlightenment. Thus each character serves as a "stock" figure to help Siddhartha make progress on his path, disappearing or reappearing as he learns what he needs to from them.
