Emily Grierson was from a long lineage of Southern gentry who lost their fortunes after the fall of slavery. With nobody to tend their fields, they lost their money. Emily was the "last of the high and mighty Griersons". She was a remnant of the Old South struggling to remain relevant in a post-slavery era. Emily became what she most dreaded: unwed, alone, and discarded.
