How does the protagonist feel after he shoots the elephant?

Orwell feels a sense of emptiness and existential dread after he kills the elephant. He didn't want to kill the elephant and most probably didn't need to kill it in the first place. He did it to satisfy the local Burmese, people who detest him whether he killed the animal or not. He represents an Imperial force that he no longer wants to be a part of.
