Why did Shakespeare borrow many stories and characters from classical Greek and Roman tourers? What might his purpose have been?

Shakespeare was educated with Latin texts.... Ovid, Horace, Plautus, Seneca and Virgil. It is only natural that he would draw from these texts and allude to them in his plays.
