What situation occurred with the Prussian? Was there a part in the story that the Prussian needed a password?

The Prussians forces were attacking Paris around 1871. This was known as the Siege of Paris. The two protagonists were fishing on the boarder of no-man's land. To get into the city one needed a password. The men had it so they could go fishing. The Prussian soldiers wanted it so they could sneak into the city.
