Heaney presents nature as unforgiving yet fascinating. The child is drawn in by the imagery, regarddless of the fact that he/she is surrounded by imagery that is ‘festered’, ‘rotted’, ‘sweltered’ and ‘punishing’. Over the course of the poem, Heaney's words take on a different tone, and the child's initial fascination quickly changes to revulsion, illustration a transformation.... a kind of terror, which metaphorically represents coming of age.... the act of growing up.
