Citra is spunky, and yet, she is often afraid. Her fear, however, isn't in control, as Citra is determined and focused.... willing to oerform her role and step up to the challenges set before her. She is also moralistic, a young woman with a defined perception of right and wrong. The system itself might be corrupt, but she does not have to follow suit. This becomes evident when Citra saves Rowan's life.... thugh he is essentially in competition with her for the apprenticeship, she does the right thing and saves him anyway.

Rowan, like Citra, is trained as an apprentice to Faraday. Unlike Citra he fares badly in his subsequent apprenticeship, living and working with Goddard, who is a sadist and a psychopath. Rowan tries to do the right thing and also to be obedient but is driven over the edge when Goddard ties up a cultist for him to kill which is against the law of Scythedom. He kills Goddard by beheading him with his own sword. Rowan is able to kill more easily than Citra is and begins to worry that he might be too much like Goddard for his own comfort.
