The second-person format helps the narrator connect with the son to whom he is speaking and to whom he is giving advice.. By asking the rhetorical questions Kipling does, he involves the reader in seriously considering and perhaps answering the questions to get to the main idea which is that doing the things that are the "yes" answers to the questions will help one grow up to be a "man."
