    What is the role of women in the village of Juffure? What rights and responsibilities did they have?

    Women were the primary caregivers of the village. They were responsible for preparing and cooking meals, and were given small plots of land on which to grow rice. They lived apart from their husbands in their own huts and were responsible for the raising of children until (in the case of male children) they began manhood training. This section should include some discussion around how free women are in this context, both in terms of modern standards and how they likely viewed their own lives at the time.
