What does Montague sr. Mean by “make himself an artificial night”.?

Montague says that Romeo is depressed because Rosaline does not share the same affections that Romeo has for her. He says Romeo mopes around all day and shuts himself in his room. He draws the drapes and makes the room dark hence an "artificial night". He then broods in his room alone.
