The setting is Verona Italy which is heavily Catholic. Baz Luhrmann, the director of the 1995 film, plays up the Catholic imagery to tie in with the heavy motif of life and death. Religion becomes the backdrop of the violence and the passions of the characters. Sin and retribution also are a part of the play as well as Catholicism.
