Why Papa is in a better position than Mr. Avery and Mr. Lanier to stand up to Thurston Wallace?

Papa owns his land and works for the railroad. He is not dependent on Mr. Wallace, nor does he owe him anything. Mr. Lanier is a tenant farmer, he can be thrown off of his land.
