Why is the "berry burning" important to chapter 1?

A man named Berry was almost burnt to death by white men. Stacey says that Mr. Lanier had fetched Big Ma to help nurse Mr. Berry the night before. TJ knows about the burning because Mrs. Logan had stopped by to talk to his mother about it before school earlier that morning.
