What was TJ arrested for?

He went with Melvin and R. W. to a store in Strawberry where he thought they were purchasing a pistol for TJ. Instead, they rob the store. People late come to find TJ and they beat him and his family up. He is arrested; in the big picture, the arrest is a good thing since he is now safe from those who might take justice into their own hands.
