Although Mr Jamison supports the boycott, he is quick to tell Papa that he (and the other families) can't possibly win in a fight against Grangers or the Wallaces. He believes that implementing the boycott would be a public accusation against the Wallaces for the recent lynchings and burnings. Papa wants to go ahead with the boycott regardless, because he feels they have to try. He says that even if the adults fail in their desire to peacefully obtain justice and the freedom to work their land without fear it will be taken away, their children just might succeed one day. It's a matter of principle.
