Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry

The literal meaning of the school bus in the novel is that it physically hurts the children, so they try to physically hurt it back. On a deeper level, what does the bus truly symbolize?

The bus represents the entitlement and hierarchy that white students have over black students. While black students are forced to walk long distances in dirt and rain, white students get a bus. The bus reinforces the discrimination and segregation of dominant white society.
