Papa's leg is broken on the way home from Vickburg, when he, Stacey, and Mr. Morrison are attacked. Unable to work, and with Mama being fired, the Logans are in a desperate financial situation. They will need a good crop, and even them they will likely have to sell off their cows to keep up on the mortgage.
